Pharmacy (from the Greek φάρμακον 'pharmakon' = drug) is the health profession that links the health sciences with the chemical sciences, and it is charged with ensuring the safe and effective use of Pharmaceutical drugs.

The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing medications, and it also includes more modern services related to health care, including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information. Pharmacists, therefore, are the experts on drug therapy and are the primary health professionals who optimize medication use to provide patients with positive health outcomes. Pharmacy is also the term for an establishment where pharmacy (in the first sense) is practised (synonym: drugstore).

The word pharmacy is derived from its root word pharma which was a term used since the 1400–1600s. In addition to pharma responsibilities, the pharma offered general medical advice and a range of services that are now performed solely by other specialist practitioners, such as surgery and midwifery. The pharma (as it was referred to) often operated through a retail shop which, in addition to ingredients for medicines, sold tobacco and patent medicines. The pharmas also used many other herbs not listed.

In its investigation of herbal and chemical ingredients, the work of the pharma may be regarded as a precursor of the modern sciences of chemistry and pharmacology, prior to the formulation of the scientific method.

Is it possible to safely and legally buy antibiotics in the US from online pharmacies without a prescription?
Q. I have seen ads for many online pharmacies that say "no prescription required." I would like to purchase antibiotics without a prescription (I'm in the US). Is this legal? Is this safe? Has anyone done it? Recommendations as to a particular online pharmacy.

What pharmacies and stores can the syrup of ipecac be bought from without a prescription from a doctor?
Q. Please be specific with pharmacies and stores! Thanks!

A. Nearly any drugstore in the US. Hopefully, you are purchasing this because you have small children, and you want it on hand in case of accidental poisoning. If you are intending to purchase this to facilitate purging (e.g., if you are bulimic), do not do it. Syrup of Ipecac IS poison. That's why it makes you vomit. The reason they give it in the case of poisonings is b/c the chance you'll die from the S.O.I. is less than the chance you'll die of whatever other poison you ingested. I cannot emphasize this strongly enough. do not take syrup of ipecac unless you have been advised to do so in order to save your life (i.e., you have been poisoned). Taking S.O.I. kills countless bulmics every year. Don't be a statistic.

How should pharmacies dispose of their patients' excess medications?
Q. Patients are being advised not to flush extra medications or throw them away because they can leech into the groundwater. Instead they are being told to return them to the pharmacy. I work in a pharmacy, and we take back patients' extra medications, but we really don't know how to dispose of them. What is the best way to dispose of them?

A. Most pharmacies dispose of meds that are uncontrolled by the old fashioned way of flushing them. As you know, controlled substances need to be recorded and documented if wasted. Some places grind them up prior to flushing them. Good luck
