In chemistry, an alcohol is any organic compound in which a hydroxyl functional group (-O H) is bound to a carbon atom, usually connected to other carbon or hydrogen atoms. An important class are the simple acyclic alcohols, the general formula for which is CnH2n+1OH. Of those, ethanol (C2H5OH) is the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages, and in common speech the word alcohol refers specifically to ethanol. Other alcohols are usually described with a clarifying adjective, as in isopropyl alcohol (propan-2-ol) or wood alcohol (methyl alcohol, or methanol). The suffix -ol appears in the IUPAC chemical name of all alcohols. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How does alcohol affect the baby in first Trimester? Q. I want to know if the mother takes in alcohol in first Trimester will that really affect the growth of the baby? What results will appear if the mother takes in alcohol? Asked by sweetmacbook - Wed Oct 7 06:21:58 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy is risky especially in the 1st trimester as the baby is undergoing alot of essential development and alcohol can cross the placenta. Alcohol has been reported to affect not only the birth weight of the baby but also brain and nervous system development and can result in still births and miscarriages. Scientists do not know what amount of alcohol will have these effects as it depends upon the metabolism of the mother. However, most recommend stearing clear of all alcohol just to be safe. Personally, I think if your unsure you should probably ask your doctor as they would be able to give you the best answer. p.s: Answered by Cally - Wed Oct 7 06:48:52 2009 Whats the difference between mouthwash with alcohol and w/o alcohol in it? Alcahol acts as a disinfectant... that's why it burns. It's killing all the bacteria in your mouth. Alcahol free uses a different agent for disinfecting your mouth that's probably less reliable than Alcahol. I'd just go with original listerine, unless the burn is a little too much. After a few days, it dosent hurt very much because the days of using it have acted like napalm against bacteria. Wait a minute... you can get DRUNK?!? Oh, hang on a sec... NO SH|T.
