From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Liniment, (or embrocation) from the Latin linere, to anoint, is a medicated topical preparation for application to the skin. Preparations of this type are also called balm. Liniments are of a similar viscosity to lotions (being significantly less viscous than an ointment or cream) but unlike a lotion a liniment is applied with friction; that is, a liniment is always rubbed in. Liniments are typically sold to relieve pain and stiffness, such as from sore muscles or from arthritis. These liniments typically are formulated from alcohol, acetone, or similar quickly evaporating solvents, and contain counterirritant aromatic chemical compounds such as methyl salicilate, benzoin resin or capsaicin. Opodeldoc is a sort of liniment invented by the physician Paracelsus. Absorbine Jr is a trade name for a brand of liniment for human use widely sold in the United States. The stronger version, Absorbine, is for horses. Traditional Chinese medicine features a wide variety of different liniments, with applications ranging from topical anaesthetics used in bone setting to simple sore muscles and bruises, such as Dit Da Jow or Ligusticum From Wikipedia under the

Liniment works either by evaporating and thus cooling the skin or by irritating the skin enough to confuse the brain's pain processing system. In either case, it contains irritants that may be harmful at worst or extremely painful at least if it enters the bloodstream or comes in contact with subcutaneous (below the skin) tissue. Therefore, never apply liniment on broken skin. Answered by rhapword - Wed May 30 14:12:44 2007 Should I wrap my horses legs at night after a hard ride or show? especialy if its a two or three day event? Q. I am just starting out 3 day eventing and have gotten to riding quite alot. My horse is 6 and sound and I have had no trouble with her doing hard workouts or seeming sore but I want to prevent any trouble down the line, should I be wrapping her legs at night at events and after workouts? If so, should I put liniment on underneath the wraps and what kind? Asked by eyecandycowgirl1621 - Mon May 19 03:37:16 2008 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments A. I have been three day eventing for 8 years now. Im guessing if you are just starting out you are doing lower levels probably the beginner novice, novice or training levels. At those levels you should not worry about wrapping. I compete at 3 star events doing advanced level and we have never wrapped our horses legs unless they are swollen or got an injury. You can and most likely will do more damage than good wrapping. Just make sure to hose her legs off after a good workout or show with cool water and you can rub some liniment on her legs. Does not really matter what brand you use although I prefer vetrolin which I apply with a sponge. Do not rinse the liniment off. Good luck with your eventing. Q. since my horse is 25 years old, my friend said i should buy some liniment for him. which kind? thanks! Asked by i love my horse (: - Tue Sep 9 17:09:55 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. All liniments do about the same thing - there are gel ones and thin liquid ones. It really depends on how you intend to use it. Just because your horse is 25 years old, doesn't mean he requires it. I have younger horses whom I will often give a rub down with liniment in water after working out - it makes them feel good and cool, like a brace after a hot workout. For this I use the Absorbine thin liquid in the yellow bottle - a cupful in a bucket of water simply sponged over the horse will make them feel good. If a horse has sore legs or muscles, the gels are nice - squirt a little in your hand, rub hands together and massage the sore muscles - it'll be like a massage to him. I have also found I like the Absorbine Spearmint Gel… [cont.] Answered by buffy - Tue Sep 9 17:18:44 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "liniment"
